WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Another month has
passed, it does not seem possible. Again projects
continue to interfere with the mule ridin’!
The fun day at Kiva on June 5th was well attended,
and a good time was had by all. We all used Diane’s
obstacle course, then retired to the recreation room
for a pot luck lunch. I ate so much out that it
turned it was dinner for me!
On June 12th the Coggins clinic was held
at the Valencia County Fair Grounds from 9-12. If
you have not received you results contact Connie at
sayhayroz@aol.com or 505-864-6504. Connie will
also bring the results to the Central Chapter
meeting on July 13th.
June 18-20 was the annual Durfee Canyon Ranch ride;
a good time was had by most, it was not so great for
Jane Farmer who took a spill Saturday afternoon. At
the ride three new members signed up. Jane Farmer
from San Antonio, and Magdalena feed owners
Catherine DeMaria and Athena Gassomis who are our
newest corporate members. Welcome to the RGMDA
We do not have a
scheduled event in July, so, if any one wants to
organize a ride, get on the phone / e-mail and let
everyone know. August will be a busy month so relax
in July. At the Torrance County Fair grounds in
conjunction with “Old Timers Days” on August 1st;
there will be a joint Carriage club / RGMDA event
that is being organized by a committee led by Gayle
Clark. The Northern Chapter is organizing a show
August 8thin conjunction with the Santa
Fe County Fair. The Valencia County Fair Mule &
Donkey show is on 8/21,
the all breeds driving show is on 8/29; entry
forms are now on line at for both of these events at
http://www.valenciafair.com/ look under the
horse link. If this is not enough activity,
the annual weekend at the Whittington Center is
August 27-29
The next board meeting
is July 16th at the Copper Canyon
Restaurant at 5400 Gibson in Albuquerque. The
meeting will start at 6:30; the room is available at
5:30, so you can eat before the meeting starts
I hope to see you all at
one of the RGMDA events or meetings this month.
As always, keep the mule
between you and the ground.
Steve
Note: Jane is at
home and feeling a bit better, she is getting
around with a walker. Her attitude is good and
she is looking forward to getting back in the
saddle. At this point there appears to be no
damage to her hip replacement.

RGMDA
EAST MTN CHAPTER MEETING, 6-1-10.
Old Business:
The club has a little under $4000 in the treasury,
and will soon be switching to a new bank. Minutes
from last meeting were read and approved.
Jerry Badura reported on the Fun day. 27 people
attended, and there was a ride in the morning, a pot
luck lunch, and obstacle work in the arena in the
afternoon. It was good to see a lot of children
attending as well.
New Business: Bill and Sanny Crawford discussed
having the club give members a patch along with
their membership. If someone wanted an additional
patch, they would need to purchase it themselves.
This would be a nice way to welcome new members, and
a way to give back to the membership. At the end of
the year, people who attend the most meetings could
be given a big patch. Lowell will make the
suggestion at the next board meeting.
There is still confusion
about the schedule for the State Fair. Linda Threet
has a contact who may have more information, and
will pass to Liz. note: The Fair people have
contacted Steve since this writing & Lorre Shemek &
the Show Committee are working with the NM State
Fair.
Rick Thompson reported on the Children’s Festival at
Las Golondrinas this weekend, and a Civil War
Reenactment at Pecos this Saturday.
There
will be a Mountain Man Rendezvous at Eagle Nest June
24-27. Rick will play Brigadier General Carlton
at Fort Union on Saturday of that week, and will
then go to Eagle Nest.
Davis Hats
had an event at his home but it was too windy to do
many outdoor activities. There were a lot of
vendors and a fair number of spectators as well.
Jerry Badura asked if anyone from the group was
going to the July 4th Parade in Moriarty,
and several members are. Enough members are going
to be going that we felt it would be appropriate to
go as a group. Jerry will organize the event for
our group. Members who don’t have an animal to ride
or drive can ride in the Severs hitch wagon. The
parade will be on the 3rd, Saturday.
Barbara Wagers, with Lucky 13 Donkey Shelter,
informed the group that she will be having a benefit
yard sale on 6/13 to raise money to have two
recently acquired jack donkeys gelded.
Gayle reported that a neighbor’s stray donkey showed
up at their house. Lowell tied the donkey up so the
owner could find her. When they came home, they
found that the owner had drug the donkey home on her
side for a mile. The Clark’s have reported him to
the livestock board, but there hasn’t been a
decision made yet. Gayle made a motion that the
group make a donation to Lucky 13 Donkey Shelter,
motion was seconded and passed. Lucky 13 is pending
non-profit status, but is not yet finalized.
A motion was made to have Lowell take a request to
the State Board to make a donation of $200 to Lucky
13 Donkey Rescue. Motion seconded and passed.
Meeting adjourned at 7:50. Respectfully submitted,
Vicki Badura

KIVA FUN SHOW
June 5th, Kiva RV Park
On the way to the Kiva
fun day, we were early enough to see hot air
balloons landing beside the highway. At the Kiva, we
were greeted by our long eared and short eared
friends, aka mules, donkeys and horses. While I
spent most of my time having fun grooming Diane's
donkeys, my brother and most everyone else was
practicing on the trail course. There were lots of
different obstacles, such as: jumping logs, a
teeter-totter bridge, a walk-over-tarp, huge sand
filled tires, a shower curtain, a step down, and a
mail box. The most challenging obstacle for the
humans was the teeter-totter bridge, but all equines
handled that beautifully. The huge sand-filled tires
seemed to take the most skill and cookies. After a
few hours of riding, driving, or leading, all humans
went inside to share good food and stories at the
potluck. I enjoy being in the Rio Grande Mule and
Donkey Club because its like being in a small town:
you get to meet new people, yet you are always
surrounded by friends. Written by Josh & Corina

DURFEE CANYON RANCH CAMPOUT
The annual Durfee Canyon
Ranch ride was June 19-20. It was attended by 24
people. Some of us came in on Friday afternoon and
went on a short ride led by Donna and Mike to
Sergeant Tank, a year around pond that is spring fed
on the edge of the property. Saturday AM Mike and
Donna again led us on a big loop ride that went down
to Point of Rocks which is near where we camped last
year. Mike led us cross country on this ride, the
terrain was mostly flat or with moderate hills, ride
through juniper, Pinion and huge Jeffery Pines with
a couple of water crossings. At a couple of points
we were high enough to see the Plains of San
Augustine to the East. Mike sure does know this
country, most of the time I was not sure of where we
were. Saturday evening we had a great pot luck dinner
with Jerry Badura manning the grill cooking steaks
for all of us On Sunday those of us that did not go
home rode on our own. We had three new people join
the RGMDA; Jane Farmer from San Antonio, and
corporate members Catherine DeMaria and Athena
Gassonmis who are the owners of Magdalena Feed
Company. Be sure and stop in and see them when you
are in Magdalena. Also, it was real nice to
see four younger people on this ride. The Sever
boys, Clifford and Clayton; Josh Graham and Grant
Santese, Vicki Baduras nephew. The only thing that
marred a otherwise great weekend was the fall that
Jane Farmer took which required her to be
transported to the hospital in Socorro. Many thanks
to Donna and Mike who hosted this ride and all of
the work they did to make it a lot of fun. They are
already planning for next year’s campout.
