WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
I was very pleased to hear what a great success the
driving clinic on February 13 was. The show
committee is again well on the way to raising money
for the trophies and awards for the Valencia and
State fair mule and donkey shows. The participation
and interest in this clinic supports the results of
the member survey where 75% of those that responded,
stated that they preferred clinics, when asked “What
activities do you prefer?". Good job show
committee!
The same percentage of respondents indicated that
they preferred funs shows and trail rides.
The show committee
organized the ride / drive on 2/28, and a fun show
in May, they also are working to arrange a second
fun show with the carriage club, the date has not
been determined yet as I write this.
Once again, I would like to see a “ride committee”
formed that could arrange for and schedule trail
rides. At this point we have 3 rides / campouts
scheduled for the rest of this year. Please let me
know if you are interested in being a part of this
committee.
If you have not already
done so, please get your 2010 dues paid, in this
newsletter there is a 2010 application and hold
harmless form, get them filled out and mailed in as
soon as possible. As of last week when I checked the
mail box we have had 49 memberships renewed. Last
year there were 89. Starting in April the newsletter
will only be sent to those that have signed up for
2010.
There will be a board
meeting on March 26th, all members
are encourage to attend, so, if you have an item you
would like to discuss or present to the board please
e-mail it to me @
srdandall@hughes.net , or send it to the RGMDA
P.O. box . It will be brought up at the meeting.
This is your
association, we are all volunteers, and the bottom
line objective is to have fun. If you do not
participate in the planning and execution of events,
then others are doing more than their share.
As always, keep the mule
between you and the ground.
Steve

RGMDA CENTRAL
CHAPTER MEETING 2-13-10
Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Connie
Rossignol
Minutes of last meeting were approved as printed in
February Newsletter, Treasurer’s Report was
approximately $3,900
Connie went over the Board report, which was printed
in the February Newsletter.
Richard Selby reported that the Bosque del Apache
ride/drive is slated for March 20, 2010 with the
Carriage Club. There was some discussion of
separating the slow vs. fast riders and being sure
to pick up manure.
Steve Randall stated that out of 90 surveys set out
only 29 were returned. While the low number of
responses is disappointing, the majority of
responses want more fun shows/rides.
Only
46 members have paid dues – Please Pay Your Dues!
Connie also announced a new donation to our video
library and commented that many items are missing
and the need for a system of check out and return.
A
50/50 was held which raised $9.00 for the club.
The
meeting was turned over to the guest speaker, Kathy
O’Neal who owns The Livery Training Stables in
Corrales. She spoke at length about different riding
bits and their functions. Thank you Kathy, I, for
one, learned a great deal.
Meeting was well attended with over 20 people.
Respectfully submitted, Kim Fay

RGMDA
EAST MTN CHAPTER MEETING, 2/2/2010.
The
meeting was called to order at 7 pm by Lowell
Clark. Members present are Gayle and Lowell Clark,
Bill and Sanny Crawford, Anna Coffer, Linda Threet,
Marvin Perkins, Liz Moore & Buddy Buzzard, Alan &
Deb Platt, Jerry & Vicki Badura.
Lowell read a letter from Steve Randall praising Liz
Moore for her wonderful job on the RGMDA
newsletter. Everyone present agreed…thanks Liz!!!
$3099.00 in club treasury.
Old business: January trail ride was cancelled
due to snow. Jerry reported that Steve Randall
called and told him the requirements to have an
activity covered by insurance. Steve needs at least
two days notice to tell the insurance company.
Also, if someone doesn’t have a ‘hold harmless’ form
on file, they are required to sign one at an
activity.
Liz
reported on BOD meeting. The Board will be meeting
every other month, rather than monthly. Steve is
very interested in responding to members’ feedback
from the survey, and to have an activity every month
if possible. Insurance has been renewed.
New Business: Kiva Ride/Drive coming up. Deb
said the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo is coming in
March. Liz is going to invite David DeBorde from
Paul’s Vet to speak at an upcoming meeting. He is
planning on opening a feed store in Edgewood, and is
knowledgeable about vaccinations, supplements, etc.
Lowell said that NM horse owners will be getting a
letter from the brand board regarding a mass blood
draw. Every horse in the state is going to be
tested for a tick-borne disease, and if positive,
the animal will be destroyed. Lowell shared a copy
of a newspaper article on the disease.
Gayle brought up the idea of doing a show at the
Torrance Co. Fairgrounds next summer, along with the
Carriage Club. This could attract people who are
upset with the State Fair. 4-H or FFA could be
invited to run a concession stand. Gayle and Sam
are going to a meeting on the 16th to get
more information. Gayle suggested combining the
show with the Estancia Old Timer’s parade, in late
July. Everyone liked the idea, and Gayle will call
Randall, and will bring up the idea to the Carriage
club.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm.

RGMDA Northern Chapter Meeting Minutes, 2/16/2010
Kimberleys’ Residence
The meeting was called
to order by Bob Larison at 8:00pm. In attendance
were: Dick & Sue Kimberley, Eldon & Karen Reyer,
Bob & Cindy Larison, Ron & Pat Rundstrom. Shaun
West and Casey Kimberley were guests.
Guest Speaker: Shaun West (the Kimberleys’
son-in-law) engaged us with his stories of working
on Australian stations (ranches). Shaun is from
Brisbane, Australia, and in his younger days spent 2
years as a “ringer” (cowboy) “mustering” (rounding
up) cattle. He showed us computer generated photos
of Australia and guided us around the Continent
explaining the various geography and topography of
Australia. He also had an Australian Stock Saddle and
explained the differences in the Stock Saddle and
the US Western saddle, and the difference in the
riding techniques used.We learned a good bit of
Aussie vocabulary during the presentation!
Old Business:
There was nothing to review.
New Business:We
discussed the possibility of having a fun day along
with the Santa Fe County Fair. Karen Reyer will
look into this further, as she has been connected
with the County Fair for years.
Request for
Educational Assistance:
Dick
Kimberley reported that Lorrie Crawford, Education
Tech. for the Carson National Forest in Northern New
Mexico and the Rio Grande National Forest in
Southern Colorado, is looking for help in a
“hands-on”, sensory component to her education and
training presentations to children and adults with
her projects regarding the Old Spanish National
Historic Trail. As many of our members know, the
Old Spanish Trail was used from 1829 - 1848 to
transport primarily woolen goods from Santa Fe and
Taos to Los Angeles. Mules were the primary mode of
transportation along the trail during this period
and were also being traded for in Los Angeles.
Without the mule, this piece of history may never
have occurred. Lorrie’s work on the Old Spanish
Trail involves a variety of projects, but one that
is key, is education. She believes it is important
to provide children (and adults) with opportunities
to use their senses and truly
experience parts of the
history she presents. She said,
“I
would love for
people to have the opportunity to learn more about
the mule and possibly have opportunities to see,
touch and observe one (or more) as part of the
education about the trail. Last Fall I did a pilot
program in a very rural part of Colorado and was
surprised to learn that the children, teachers and
parents knew very little about mules. It was fun to
share interesting bits of information about the mule
and see the students interest and surprise.”
Lorrie has
contacted our Northern Chapter in an effort to
enhance her education program through “connecting
with proud owners of mules in the Northern NM area
that might be willing to participate in education
programs in the future. The perspective that these
owners could provide about the mule and its history
would be a memorable part of the educational
experience”.
She
is hoping that RGMDA would consider possible
partnering or letters of support for grants (in the
future) and the possibility of being able to
incorporate a mule, and their owner, during field
trips regarding the Old Spanish Trail, specifically
in the Taos, Tres Piedras, El Rito or other Northern
NM areas. “The mules were such a key ingredient
in the success of the trail that I want to be sure
that people have opportunities to learn more about
them during the programs”.Lorrie will be
attending our March Chapter meeting to get
acquainted with our members and provide a brief,
informal presentation on how we may be able to
assist her in her education efforts, which also
would provide us one more opportunity to educate the
public on our mules and donkeys. As always, our
Chapter meeting will be at the Kimberleys’ home, and
will be informal, with a pot-luck dinner. Any RGMDA
members who may be interested in attending are
welcome!
Upcoming Events:
March 16 –
Regular meeting of the Northern Chapter at the
Kimberleys’ home. Lorrie Crawford, Education Tech
with the US Forest Service, will be our guest
speaker. Please see above “Request for Educational
Assistance” for details.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Kimberley, Secretary, Northern Chapter

DRIVING CLINIC
The
driving clinic with Dick Hensleigh sponsored by the
RGMDA Show committee was a great success. The club
netted $385.00 to use toward the buckle awards for
the State Fair. The weather co-operated for the 29
participants, who's interests ranged from beginners
to experienced drivers. Mr. Hensleigh worked with
each participant, answering questions & providing
tips from correct harnessing practices to
driving tools. Participants left wanting another
clinic. The show committee is already working on
organizing another one. Stay tuned for future clinic
information.
