WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

This month it has been one thing after another around here, we have the usual three or four projects going on at the same time, can’t get anything finished as Mule Ridin’ keeps interfering with work!
Mary and I went to the Badura’s on the 23rd for the ride / fun day. It was great ride led by Jerry in the AM, back to their home for a outstanding lunch. Jerry and Vicki once again outdid themselves with the grill. After lunch we entered the arena to practice on several obstacles that will again be featured at the show / fun day at the Torrance County Fair grounds. The weather was near perfect, almost no wind. Thank You Vicki and Jerry and all of the other East Mountain chapter people that helped organize this event.
On June 12th there will be a Coggins clinic held at the Valencia County Fair Grounds from 9-12. This will cost 20.00 / head. An attempt is also being made to have a brand inspector present for those of you that need hauling papers.
In the next few months there are three more fun days scheduled. The first is on June 5th at Kiva RV, this one is being organized by the show committee and the Central Chapter. The next one is at the Torrance County Fair grounds in conjunction with “Old Timers Days” on August 1st; this event is a joint Carriage club / RGMDA event and is being organized by a committee led by Gayle Clark. This will have events like those of Rio Abojo Days. The last event that is being planned by the Northern Chapter will be on August 8th in conjunction with the Santa Fe County Fair. This event will have an obstacle course, Cowboy Race, and several demonstrations.  Click for preliminary info. All of this on top of the Mule show on 8/21; and an all breeds driving show on 8/29; these two events are during the Valencia County Fair. If this is not enough activity, the annual weekend at the Whittington Center is August 27-29
It is real nice to see so many of our members getting involved with planning events for this summer.
As of the end of May we have 68 member ships, if you know of anyone that has not renewed, applications and hold harmless form are available on the web site.
The next board meeting is July 16th  at the Copper Canyon Restaurant at 5400 Gibson in Albuquerque. The meeting will start at 6:30; the room is available at 5:30, so you can eat before the meeting starts
I hope to see you all at one of the RGMDA events or meetings this month.
As always, keep the mule between you and the ground.
Steve

RGMDA BOARD MEETING MEETING 5-21-10

Members present: Steve and Mary Randall, Bob and Cindy Larison,Lowell and Gayle Clark, Buddy Buzzard, Liz Moore, Dick and Sue Kimberly, Rick and Connie Rossignol

Minutes of the last meeting were accepted as published in the newsletter with no additions or corrections.

Treasurer's Report
 Balance  $3921.05

Committee Reports
Show Committee
A fun show is planned by the Central Chapter on June 5th at Kiva RV Park
A fun show is planned by the East Mountain Chapter May 23rd at the Badura's home

Old Business
Bank Accounts
The account at Bank of the West remains open until all checks have cleared with a balance of approximatelt $40 to cover an outstanding check. When that check clears it will be closed.
As per Wells Fargo Bank policy, $100 will be deposited in an RGMDA savings account each month, then returned to the checking account so that RGMDA avoids a monthly service charge.
Show at Torrence County Fair Grounds August 1, 2010
The show is being organized in concert with the N.M. Carriage Association and Gayle Clark is representing RGMDA. She reports than an organizational meeting is upcoming but currently the tentative plan is a $25 fee to show all day with an additional $5/class for classes that offer a pay back. To avoid having to calulate paybacks the organizers are entertaining a policy of winner take all. The classes will probably be along the lines of the Rio Abajo Days shows of the past. Pete Hughes has generously agreed to judge the event.
The expense and any profit from this show is to be split between RGMDA and the New Mexico Carriage Association. Steve Randall's suggestion that the committee keep entry fees as reasonable as possible to encourage participation was supported by the rest of the board members.

Club Roster
The club roster has been sent out with 67 current members.
 Breakdown of members by chapter:
The Central Chapter 37
East Mountain Chapter 21
Northern Chapter 9[Tthe Northern Chapter has since added one more member to total 10]

It was agreed that Steve will send out a list of newly added members only instead of sending an entire roster every time a member is added.

Club Directory in Hoofprints Magazine
Steve was told he would be receiving an invoice for the RGMDA listing but has heard nothing as of today's meeting.
N.M. Nicker
The current list of upcoming events is not current. Steve e-mailed to ask them to update their calendar from the club web site.

New Business
RGMDA has been asked to donate a membership as a prize for the Driving Show planned for the last weekend of Valencia County Fair. It was proposed that we donate a membership for the full year along with a club cap. Connie Rossignol so moved and Lowell Clark seconded. The motion carried.
It was proposed that the club furnish the main course [ steaks] for the Saturday night potluck at ride and camp out on the Durphy Ranch  hosted by Mike and Donna Lunn on the weekend of June 19th. Dick Kimberly so moved, Bob Larison seconded and the motion carried.
The Northern Chapter is organizing an event in conjunction with Santa Fe County Fair on August 8th. Click here for preliminary info This will be a fun show type event and participation will be free. Since some start up cost could be expected and since this is a club activity it was suggested the club support any costs incurred. Connie Rossignol so moved, Cindy Larison seconded and the motion carried.

Announcements
The Central Chapter voted to have another Coggin's Clinic. Dr. Brasmer will provide a Coggin's Clinic on June 12 at the Valencia County Fairgrounds parking lot from 9 am til 12 pm. Cost $20/ head first come first served. Gayle will pass this information on to the NM Carriage Association.

Northern New Mexico Horsemen's Association will hold a Horsemen's Challenge June 13 and July 11. Click here to see their website.

Bob Larison was contacted by Ranch De Las Golondrinas regarding events they would especially like us to attend:
Spring Festival June 5-6
New Mexico Round-up  June 12-13[ famous N.M. characters will be represented by people in period costume]
Lavender Fair  July 24-25
Summer Festival August 7-8

see the Ranch web site for details and fall dates

Members are encouraged to participate in the Ranch events as Ranch De Las Golondrinas has been very appreciative and supportive of our club and has made generous donations in past years.

There being no other business the meeting was adjourned.
Next meeting  July 16, 6:30, Copper Canyon Restaurant

RGMDA EAST MTN CHAPTER MEETING, 5-4-10.

Meeting called to order at 7:00 by Lowell Clark.

Members &  Guests Present:  Gayle & Lowell Clark, Liz Moore, Buddy Buzzard, Rick Thompson, Deb & Alan Platt, Anna Coffer & guest, Linda Threet, Connie Hatley & guest, Tony C. DeBaca, Jerry & Vicki Badura, Bill & Sanny Crawford, Kari Suave.

Guest speaker:  Randy Riley,  NM Livestock Board Inspector.  Randy spoke about Equine Piroplasmosis, and handed out flyers about the disease.  Randy reported he is picking up 2 horses a week that have been dumped on the west mesa and Pajarito road.  The horses are generally injured or in poor health.  If they can track down who the owner is, they will be cited for animal cruelty, but it’s rare that the owner can be located.
Next year the whole state will be TB free, and USDA will be lifting the ban.  This primarily affects livestock which are being shown (sheep, goats, cattle, etc.).  841-6161 is the main number for the Livestock Board.  When calling, Randy suggests asking to speak to a live person, and not to leave a voice message (they’re slow to call back!)  There was some discussion about whether or not bovine diseases, such as brucellosis, could be transferred to horses, but Randy said that this wasn’t possible.
"A word to the wise” from Randy, is to always have the right paperwork with you when hauling, as the state is now requiring inspectors to make road stops of livestock haulers.  Some districts are much worse than others about making road stops.  Animals are rarely impounded unless there is a suspicion that a horse is stolen.
As far as euthanizing horses, the bodies can be disposed of at the landfill in Bernalillo, but you have to have a certificate from a veterinarian that the animal didn’t have a contagious disease.  Animals can be buried on the owner’s property when the local laws allow.
When hauling in your home district (District 8 for most of us), you can haul with proof of ownership.  Registration papers are ok, but a hauling card (1-H) is preferred.  If the horse is branded, and you have the brand registered, you can haul within your own district without papers.  It’s ok to keep a photocopy of the papers in your truck.
When asked about whether or not owners would need Coggins or Health Certificates for the Fun Show in August, Randy said that this wouldn’t be required, as District 8 is so large that all the attendees would be from within the district.  Coggins and Health Certificate would always be required when an animal is coming into NM from another state.

Old Business:  Minutes from last meeting accepted as written.
Anna Coffer reported on the ride/drive at her house.

New Business:  Deb Platt reported that there is a ‘Horses & Hooves’ fair in Edgewood on 6/12 & 13 at the Wildlife West nature park.  There will be clinicians, vendors, and a pie eating contest.  RGMDA/NMCA will have a table with flyers, membership forms, and info about the Fun Show.  Volunteers needed to man the table. Call 281-9831, or 384-1000.

Rick Thompson gave out flyers for Los Golondrinas, and suggested that it might be good for our group to participate during the spring Children’s Fair June 5/6 – dress in 1800’s, early 1900’s preferred.  Another good weekend would be the 2nd annual ‘Viva Mexico’ celebration – dress in Mexican/Spanish colonial style preferred.  Another weekend might be the ‘Summer Frontiers Day’ weekend, or the Spanish Renaissance Fair weekend.  We could start a tradition with our group at Golondrinas as well.

Fun Day May 23rd at the Baduras, and Estancia Old Timer’s Fun show August 1st

Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
